The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has met with Russian Foreign Minster Sergey Lavrov in Geneva. De Mistura said the discussion covered the Syrian constitution committee and how to enforce the ceasefire resolution.
STAFFAN DE MISTURA UN SPECIAL ENVOY FOR SYRIA "We have been discussing with minister Sergey Lavrov on the future discussion regarding how to accelerate the constitution committee, and certainly we discussed very much how to make sure the 2401 should be fully cemented regarding eastern Ghouta and the rest of Syria."
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution demanding a cease-fire of at least 30 days across Syria on February 24. Resolution 2401 demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities to allow humanitarian access and urgent medical evacuations. The cease-fire does not apply to the military operations against terrorist groups. Russia announced on February 26 that it will hold a five-hour ceasefire daily in eastern Ghouta to allow civilians to evacuate. However, Syrian state television reported that rebels began shelling the area to prevent the evacuation. The rebel militia denied such charges.
