Poverty is one of the most urgent problems needed to be solved in Africa, while on the other hand, China has abundant experience in poverty reduction. Recently China shared its experiences by hosting a field visit to Guizhou, in southwestern China, for delegates from Africa. RORY COEN has the story.
Nestled deep in the Wumeng Mountains in southwestern China, Bijie in Guizhou Province used to be one of the poorest regions of the country 30 years ago. Now its inhabitants are coming out of poverty. Zhou Xiaojun relocated here from his poor village in the mountains. He now works in the greenhouses 5 minutes walk from his house. He earns 30 thousand yuan a year, several times more than what he used to, and receives all the public services the village can offer.
ZHOU XIAOJUN RESIDENT OF XINGFU SECOND VILLAGE "There is a clinic only a few hundred meters from here. School for my kids is also very close by."
China has lifted 800 million people out of poverty in less than 4 decades. What happened in this particular part of the country isn't complicated. A major enterprise built houses to relocate impoverished villagers from the mountains, as well as farms and factories to provide employment. Then more companies came in, running the farms and factories and providing training for the villagers. The local government worked as a middleman between the enterprises and the locals.
ZHANG HAIHUA PARTY SECRETARY OF XIFENG VILLAGE CPC COMMITTEE "The village committee finds the most suitable jobs for the villagers and introduces them to work in the greenhouses, electronic factories, or textile factories. Their standard of living is improved through this."
This is China's solution to poverty, but delegates from Africa touring the projects believe it can also be applied to Africa.
EMMANUEL FREDDIE MUGUNDA DEPUTY MINISTER OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION REPUBLIC OF UGANDA "You keep them under some company, running the farm, if we look at that and see how to customize it, it can help."
As of 2013, poverty still affected 400 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Issues like poor infrastructure, improper land management and lagging technology still impede poverty reduction on the continent. During the visit, delegates called for deeper cooperation between Africa and China to address these issues. RORY COEN, CGTN.
