Huawei is sponsoring a global contest in information technology. The competition opened in the Chinese city of Shenzhen attracting 49 teams from 30 countries. Africa sent its best students to join the games. And CGTN met one of them - a Nigerian student aiming for greatness.
Young students from 30 countries gathered in China's answer to Silicon Valley, Shenzhen, for a top prize in the industry of ICT or Information Communication Technology. The 2019 Huawei ICT Competition kicked off in the company's headquarters on Saturday.
Adebayo Abdulqudus, a 22-year-old Nigerian university student, is heading for the final contest. He only began his study in communications technology two years ago. But, he's confident and sees no reason why this should stop him from competing with elite youth talent from other countries such as China, the UK, and Russia.
ADEBAYO ABDULQUDUS NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENT "The sky is big enough for everyone to fly. My teammates and I are working very hard. We are positive. We are very positive."
One night before the finale, Adebayo was still preparing every minor detail for the competition with his teammates. Adebayo says he will give everything he can to win the trophy for his country.
ADEBAYO ABDULQUDUS NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENT "For the past eight months, we left our families, we left relatives, we left our friends, we left out social lives. We want these and we want to win."
Adebayo is not alone. Over 100-thousand university students from 61 countries participated in the Huawei ICT competition. Most of them are from the developing countries. Using what they learn to change their countries is a common wish for them.
As the final game kicked off, Adebayo's team had to establish an efficient cloud computing service in 8 hours. The examination was much more difficult than he thought.
ADEBAYO ABDULQUDUS NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENT "The exam? I don't what to say. It's more than we thought. We tried our best. We prayed we win something."
Though the chance to win the top trophy was diminishing, Adebayo says his participation, the experience, and the opportunity to learn, is the most important thing of all.
GE YUNFEI HUAWEI HEADQUARTERS, SHENZHEN "Nowadays the field of information communication technology, also known as ICT, is an essential pillar of modern society. And as Adebayo sees it, ICT is a crucial tool for people like him to build a better future for his country and the world. Ge Yunfei, CGTN, Huawei Headquarters in Shenzhen."
