Traffic violators in Beijing have another pair of "eyes" to contend with.
A robot highway patrol popped up on the capital's Airport Expressway on Monday in a trial run conducted by the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau to monitor illegal behaviors on the road.
The electronic patrol member is attached to the guardrail and is able to move forward and backward at the speed of five kilometers hourly. With its in-built camera, the robot is able to catch driving and other traffic breaches in the emergency lines. The real-time images are sent to police smartphones on 4G data.

In case of emergency, a police officer can have the robot transferred to the spot to take photos for follow-up operations. Its sound and light alarm also makes it possible to warn drivers of road conditions in cases of extreme weather, accidents or roadworks.
The luggage-size robot weighs about 20 kilograms, and is easily transported and installed by only one person.
The traffic bureau hopes to utilize the technology on other highways in the near future.
