Syria Conflict: New violence in Eastern Ghouta after UN demands truce
[]
Air-strikes continue to pound Syria's Eastern Ghouta. The fighting has not stopped, despite a new UN Security Council-approved truce. CGTN's Alaa Ebrahim has more.
ALAA EBRAHIM DAMASCUS "24 hours after a UN security council resolution that called for a 30-day ceasefire, new fighting on several fronts began in eastern Ghouta. Syrian military officers tell CGTN that shortly after dawn local time, armored and infantry units began a ground offensive in Ghouta while airstrikes resumed on Sunday. A government source tells CGTN the ongoing operation is in compliance with the UN-imposed truce as it only targeted Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate which is excluded from the ceasefire agreement. Rebels tell CGTN that despite government attacks, rebels managed to capture several soldiers and forced the Syrian army out of three villages . The Syrian army press office refused to comment on the ongoing offensive or confirm that Syrian troops have been captured. Ghouta is one of the last rebel held areas near the capital Damascus. Meantime, hundreds of people have died since the bombing campaign began last week. Alaa Ebrahim - CGTN - Damascus."
