Organizers of a beauty pageant for camels in Saudi Arabia have got the hump with 12 entrants and kicked them out after they were found to have been given cosmetic enhancements.
More than 26,000 camels are competing for combined prize money of 57 million US dollars in Al Dhana, 120 kilometers north of capital Riyadh.
The annual King Abdulaziz Camel Festival takes place from January 19 to April 15, with camels judged on their height, shapely figures, humps, lips and even ears.
The big prizes have led to cheating, according to local media. Some breeders re-shape camels’ mouths, some inject Botox into their camels’ noses or chins to make them look plump, others make the animals’ ears smaller via surgery.
Organizers ban camels injected with Botox, as well as any that have been shaved or dyed on any parts of their body.
