Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says China and the United States should stick to cooperation, and avoid conflict and confrontation. This is as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wraps up his whirlwind East Asia tour in Beijing. CGTN reporter Zheng Yibing has the details.
It's their second meeting since June. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged the US to take the right stance on issues of common concerns.
WANG YI CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER "China and the US should stick to the right path of win-win cooperation and avoid straying into conflict and confrontation."
Relations have been rough, as both sides don't see eye to eye on trade, the Taiwan issue, and disputes on the South China Sea.
While Pompeo has been keeping a firm stance on US policy, he said the US values ties with China and is ready for talks to iron out the differences.
MIKE POMPEO US SECRETARY OF STATE "I look forward to having the opportunity to discuss each of it today because this is an incredibly important relationship."
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the China-US joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations, and Wang Yi said cooperation is the only right choice for both countries.
Pompeo said the US has no intention to contain China's development and in the meantime, will keep to the One-China policy and push forward communication and cooperation. Both also exchanged views on the denuclearization process on the Korean peninsula, expressing the will to work together to realize peace.
ZHENG YIBING BEIJING "Beijing says both countries should strengthen communication and cooperation and build healthy and stable ties. And only that way can they truly solve bilateral and regional issues."
