China's first unmanned surface vehicle contest started in Shanghai on Tuesday, attracting seven teams from research institutes across the country.
Taking part in the three-day event are unmanned ships for civil, commercial and other purposes. They are all able to cruise on designed courses from zigzag to linear routes, automatically dodge obstacles and identify targets. The vehicles are requested to sail smoothly while fulfilling their set missions.
Unmanned ships are generally deployed to carry out missions in settings hazardous to human beings, such as conducting environmental monitoring in radioactive contaminated sea areas. The capacities the contending ships displayed are expected to be applied to marine mapping, environmental monitoring and anti-terrorism actions in the future.
This contest is part of the 2017 World Robot Conference, and its participants will compete in the finals of the world event from Aug 23 to 27 in Beijing.
