Prime Minister Mahathir's five-day visit is being seen as a reboot for bilateral ties after Malaysia's shock change in government in May. Under Mahathir's predecessor Najib Razak, China became Malaysia's number one trading partner and number one investor in manufacturing, with the countries forging new strategic and people-to-people ties. Despite Mahathir having raised concerns over some of the previous government's projects and deals with China, expectations are high for the new Prime Minister's first visit during his second stint as leader. Our correspondent Rian Maelzer spoke with a former Malaysian ambassador to China, who is also a director of the Malaysia-China Business Council, to get his thoughts on the relationship.
ABDUL MAJID KHAN, DIRECTOR MALAYSIA-CHINA BUSINESS COUNCIL "Malaysia welcomes Chinese investment but I think with him there could be a new approach toward this flow of investment. Mahathir wants to make sure it's mutually beneficial and then he wants the Chinese to show visibly the win-win situation. Dr. Mahathir is a very pragmatic person. I think he's very pro-business. He understands the benefits that Malaysia could gain. I'm very excited that this visit takes place within just three months of the new government and I think this reflects actually the long-established relationship between the two governments. And the fact that he will be received by all the senior leaders, also affirms China's own thinking about the importance of the relationship with Malaysia and that we can move forward to further bring the relationship to a higher level."
