Eight people have been wounded in a shooting that took place in front of a mosque in the southern French city of Avignon. The incident is presumed to be a dispute between youths rather than a terror attack.
A local witness said a car pulled up with four people in it. Two people, seated in the back, stepped out of the car and started shooting at a targeted group. The perpetrators then fled the scene.
According to French newspaper La Provence, four people were wounded outside the mosque and a family of four, including a seven-year-old girl, also suffered injuries from shrapnel while in their apartment.
The shooting came as the French government prepares to extend a state of emergency in place. The country remains on alert amid heightened security following a deadly attack on Paris police in April and a series of terrorist incidents in recent years.
