For the last year, 90-year-old Cui Chenglong has had his lunch delivered to him in Shanghai. The meals come from his grandson and his wife, and the couple makes an unusual request after ordering the food: please remove the receipt.
Knowing their grandfather would protest the cost of the daily meal, Mr. Hua and his wife leaves a special notice for the deliverymen, “Please tear off the receipt in case the elder worries the food is too expensive. Thank you.”

The routine started a little over a year ago, when the couple started to worry that Cui wasn’t eating a nutritious enough lunch – something he used to cook for himself when he’s alone during the day. Taking advantage of delivery apps, the young couple started to order food for their grandpa – meals that include both meat and vegetables.
They even set an alarm at 10:00 a.m. to remind themselves it’s time to order. And with every order comes the special note, “I will leave the note every day, for I really don’t want grandpa see it and feel it’s too costly,” Hua said.

But Cui still happened to see it few times and recalled how it moved him. “I didn’t look after him when he was little, but he treats me well,” said Cui as he wiped a tear from his eye. “They worked so hard, I feel uneasy using their money.”

The note has also touched many of the deliverymen as well. Some would stay and chat with Cui to keep him company. Others would send the grandson a message reassuring them that the food has been delivered.

On one occasion, a deliveryman was so moved by the couple’s note that he bought Cui a drink, remarking that his own father was the same age.
