“New agreements on cooperation between China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Russia’s Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) will be signed next year,” said Yang Cheng, a professor at the Shanghai International Studies University on CGTN’s The Point.
China and Russia will continue efforts in reaching more consensuses using the proven mechanism between the two countries, whose relations are believed to be “at the apex of history.”
Six rounds of negotiations between Chinese and Russian ministries have been launched since Presidents Xi and Putin pledged to integrate the BRI into the EAEU on May 8, 2015, Yang said, noting that some agreements on these negotiations have been already reached on October 1.
Yang’s comments come during Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s three-day visit to China which concludes Thursday.

“One of key issues during his visit is to discuss with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang how to realize all of these agreements which have been reached,” Yang said, “And how many other key projects and mechanisms in the future should be signed.”
“Besides their agreement on trade and investment, China and Russia will also start a new round of negotiation on how to deepen their economic cooperation,” Yang added.
Li and Medvedev on Wednesday co-chaired the 22nd Regular Meeting between the Chinese and Russian premiers.
The mechanism was established in 1996 since when it has served as “an important platform to coordinate practical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges” between the two sides.
Under serious sanctions from the West since 2014, Russia is now looking for greater cooperation with China, including buying Chinese technologies and materials, as well as space and military development, said Pavel Felgenhauer, a Russian military analyst.

“The relationship is getting much more important and widening,” Felgenhauer said. “Russia and China find themselves increasingly standing back-to-back in Eurasia.”
