Japan testing missile interceptors as DPRK threat looms large
[]
Japan has begun a series of tests of its PAC-3 missile defense system at four bases in Tokyo, aiming to provide reassurance that the technology could shoot down warheads fired from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
The country's PAC-3 interceptors have a range of around 15 kilometers, able to protect large cities and key government installations.
As CGTN’s Terrence Terashima reports from Tokyo, the government wants to show Japan is well prepared to stop missiles reaching its border as well as raise public awareness of Japan’s needs in self-defense. The DPRK has conducted a number of missile tests recently, but the Japanese government has also faced domestic and international opposition to its plans to beef up missile defenses.
