Guinness World Records said the gatherings were the largest by groups of people dressed in emoji costumes simultaneously in several places around the world.

The global promotional campaign comes ahead of the release of “The Emoji Movie”, a film about an emoji that does not like to stick to a single expression. /VCG Photo

Jack Brockbank, official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, told Sony Pictures Entertainment, the producer of the movie: “We are incredibly impressed by the level of coordination and timing required to pull off this global record attempt -- and it all happened simultaneously!
