China and the United States have agreed to hold another round of trade talks early next month. The Chinese commerce ministry's announcement came after a phone call between Vice Premier Liu He on one side and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on the other.
A spokesperson said preparatory negotiations would begin later this month. The size of their task got even greater last weekend, after the two sides imposed even more tariffs on each other's goods. Beijing went one step further and lodged a complaint over America's actions with the World Trade Organization.
GAO FENGCHINESE COMMERCE MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "The US tariff measures targeting Chinese imports seriously violate the rules of free trade and the multilateral trading system. China's complaint against the US at the WTO is a bid to protect the country's legitimate rights and interests, and to defend the multilateral trading system."
