Fourteen people have been confirmed dead in two separate car ramming incidents in Spain on Thursday. The first attack saw a van mowing down pedestrians on Las Ramblas, a busy boulevard in central Barcelona. Thirteen people were killed. A few hours later, a car ploughed into pedestrians in the popular seaside resort town of Cambrils, 110km southwest of Barcelona.

Uproar in Las Ramblas | Thursday, August 17, 5:00 P.M. local time
A white Fiat van veered off the road and crashed into a crowd outside the Plaça de Catalunya metro station. The driver continued down the pedestrian boulevard of Las Ramblas, a popular tourist destination, for more than 500 meters before crashing into a news stand and then fleeing away on foot. The vehicle was abandoned at the foot of a mosaic by artist Joan Míro. The attack killed 13 people and left more than 100 others injured.
A terrorist attack | 7:00 P.M. local time
Catalan police confirmed they were dealing with a terrorist attack. On Twitter, they said they had “activated the terrorist attack protocol” for the region.
Checkpoint incident | 7:30 P.M. local time
A man was shot dead when he had attempted to drive through a police roadblock in the town of Sant Just Desvern, on the outskirts of Barcelona.
First suspect arrested | 8:00 P.M. local time
Police confirmed that a suspect, Driss Oukabir, turned himself in and said his documents were stolen to rent the white van used in the attack.
ISIL claims to be behind the attack | 9:00 P.M. local time
ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack via its online propaganda outlet.
Using the group’s Amaq news agency, ISIL said the perpetrators of the attack are “soldiers of the Islamic State” without giving any details or evidence to back the claims.
Chaos in Cambrils | Friday, August 18, 1:00 A.M. local time
Police killed four suspected terrorists and injured another one after they carried out a car attack in the coastal town of Cambrils.
Third suspect arrested | 8:30 A.M. local time
Catalan police said they have arrested a third suspect in connection with the car rampage attacks in Ripoll, near the French border where Driss Oukabir was taken into custody on Thursday.
Van driver in custody | 9:45 A.M. local time
Spanish police identified 18-year-old Moussa Oukabir as the suspected driver of the van used in Las Ramblas attack.
Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy joined mourners as they held a memorial for the victims. They gathered in Barcelona's Plaza de Catalunya for a one-minute silence on Friday after the two attacks.
