China's Rejuvenation: Development goals underway to improve people's lives

China has its pursuit of a national rejuvenation plan over the next couple of decades, a goal to be undertaken in two phases. In 2017, a specific roadmap was put forward. CGTN's Zheng Yibing reports on the challenges and the dream.

Just two years to eliminate poverty in rural China. That's part of the plan the country is pushing forward under the leadership of President Xi Jinping.

XI JINPING CHINESE PRESIDENT "Securing a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and embarking on a journey to fully build a modern socialist China."

The roadmap includes two phases to be completed by the middle of the century. By 2020, China wants a moderately prosperous society with people enjoying higher living standards. That means lifting more than 40 million Chinese out of extreme poverty whose daily income is only about two dollars a day.

By 2050, China aims to have built a modern socialist country that's prosperous and strong. There has been progress over the past five years. According to Premier Li Keqiang, the economy has expanded from eight-and-a-half trillion dollars to 13 trillion dollars. And more than 68 million people have been lifted out of poverty, according to data provided by the Chinese government.

In order for China to achieve its goals, President Xi says the Party's leadership is key. He has launched an unprecedented anti-corruption campaign with the help of an anti-graft agency. Fighting corruption is now a commitment for the country's leaders, as they are sworn into office.

But there are many challenges ahead in order to reach the goal of Chinese rejuvenation.

The government is committed for years to come both in terms of innovation and global influence.
