A bold pledge from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. DPRK leader Kim Jong Un is reportedly willing to shut down Pyongyang's main nuclear weapons test site. And, to allow outside experts and journalists in to verify the closing. But first, he wants something from the US. Our correspondent Toby Muse explains.
TOBY MUSE WASHINGTON "A dramatic offer, the DPRK will give up its nuclear weapons if the US commits to a formal end to the Korean war, and promises not to attack the DPRK."
YOON YOUNG-CHAN SOUTH KOREA'S PRESIDENTIAL SPOKESPERSON "Chairman Kim also said the US feel repelled by us, but once we talk, they will realize, that we are not that kind of person who will fire atomic weapons towards South Korea or the US, and, if we need in the future, build trust with the US, end the war, and eventually our promise no invasion, why would we live with the nuclear weapon?"
TOBY MUSE WASHINGTON "DPRK leader Kim Jong Un reportedly also pledged to close his nuclear test site. They are larger than previous test facilities. Further Kim reportedly said he wanted to normalize relations with Japan, so far the DPRK has not made any public comments on these reports US National Security advisor John Bolton sounded skeptical."
JOHN BOLTON US NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER "The North, what it has said it's interesting because we've been to this place before, I hope it say sincere commitment by the North."
However, Trump is expecting big things from the summit. At a Saturday night campaign rally in Michigan, Trump told supporters regarding the meeting with the DPRK leader, I think we'll do fine.
