“I am happy that President Xi Jinping used this occasion to clarify. This has been consistent that China always says that each country has its own unique social, political, historical, cultural background. Each country’s development should be different,” said Li Cheng, Director and Senior Fellow of the John L. Thornton China Center of The Brookings Institution.
Li Cheng’s remarks came after Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that China would neither import foreign models of development nor export its own domestic model at the opening ceremony of the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-Level Meeting.
The first-ever dialogue between the CPC and world political parties ended in Beijing on December 3.
Around 300 political parties and organizations from over 120 countries and regions attended the event, the first time the CPC held such a dialogue with global political representatives.
“China is becoming more and more influential and, to a certain extent, China’s own governance has received a lot of attention because of the success of the 19th Party Congress,” said Li.

He thought that the current problems happening in the world, whether the divided American society or the rise of populism in Europe, all reflected the “deep social, economic, and political problems in these societies.”
However, Li pointed out that China has its own unique challenges, and “Chinese leaders want to address these problems, not to avoid them.”
