Millions of male mosquitoes were released in South Miami’s Brewer Park on Thursday to battle Zika virus.
The male mosquitoes were infused with a naturally-occurring bacterium which left them incapable of impregnating females. These modified male mosquitoes don’t bite but have a healthy sex drive. After they mate with females, their eggs won’t hatch.
The release is aimed at preventing the Zika virus epidemic from further spreading. According to MosquitoMate, the company that developed the sterile mosquitoes, the bacteria in the mosquitoes being released can’t be spread to humans or animals and is harmless.
