The newly-appointed head of the Taiwan Affairs Office, Liu Jieyi, and visiting New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu on Monday reiterated the "1992 Consensus" as a basis for the cross-strait relationship. This was in a meeting in Shanghai.
Chu is the first politician from Taiwan to meet Liu since Beijing announced the appointment of the former UN ambassador earlier this month. Liu said Taiwan's current leader Tsai Ing-wen's refusal to affirm the 1992 Consensus, which reflects the One China principle and opposes Taiwan independence, "has shaken the ground" of cross-straight ties. But he added that the mainland's policy toward Taiwan will continue. Chu said that the insistence on the 1992 Consensus has been the consistent position of the KMT party he belongs to.
