Uganda has won this year's Break-Fast Jam breakdancing competition in Kampala. Ugandans beat other East African contestants from Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. The annual event is sponsored by Talent Africa, which aims to discover new stars and inspire young people to pursue their passion. CGTN's Hillary Ayesiga went to check it out.
The battle kicks off in style. Defending champions Uganda are facing off with teams from Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania. And the stakes are high.
"Breakdance is a battle; it's about what you have and what I have. So I came ready I hope they are ready."
"Last year we came here and failed but we went back home and trained hard. And now this year we are doing well."
Contestants showcase various moves. From windmill, freeze style and two-step, to six steps and kick-ins.
HILLARY AYESIGA KAMPALA, UGANDA "It's not just about entertainment here, but to perfect the dance skill that could earn these breakdancers points, something the judges are also looking out for."
The crew from Tanzania looked strong in the group stages. But when it came to the grand finale, Uganda were declared the winners.
They'll compete against other breakdancers in Taiwan before the end of the year.
RENEUS BBOSA BREAKDANCER, UGANDA "It's the first time Uganda is representing at the world level, and I feel special because I will be the one representing the whole of Africa in Taipei."
Event organisers are hoping to use this platform to mentor young people.
MARK KAWEESA EVENTS MANAGER "One direct way of really empowering and changing young people's lives is that, breakdancing you have to invest a lot of time in being good. So instead of these young people doing crime and getting involved in criminal activities, they invest in practising."
Some are already benefiting.
RENEUS BBOSA BREAKDANCER, UGANDA "I have a job, I teach in international schools. After school activity and I earn some money to pay rent and I have some money to buy stuff I need in my life. So I am very proud that I am doing breakdance."
As these breakdancers continue to perfect their moves, there's hope that events like this will open up networks and opportunities for other young people. HA, CGTN, K, UG.
