Pro-government forces continued an offensive against rebels in Syria's eastern Ghouta overnight on Monday and early on Tuesday.

The UK-based monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 100 civilians were killed on Monday in air raids, rocket strikes and shelling of the area on the outskirts of Damascus. It was believed to be the heaviest one-day death toll from bombardment there in three years, prompting UN to call for an immediate ceasefire. Syrian authorities said they only targeted militants.
