Australian flag carrier Qantas has just relaunched its daily flights between Sydney and Beijing, after suspending the service in 2009 following the global financial crisis. Qantas’s return to Beijing is part of its China push during the China-Australia Year of Tourism 2017, as the carrier tries to cater to a surge in Chinese tourists making trips to “Down Under”. Chinese visitors to Australia totaled 1.2 million last year, up 23 percent on annual basis. CGTN’s Cheng Lei sat down with Qantas CEO Alan Joyce to discuss how the carrier intends to keep margins high in crowded skies and whether it is feeling the heat from improved offers by Chinese airlines.
