The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States are set to begin a joint military exercise on August 21. The Pentagon said it will go ahead with the drills, dubbed Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, as originally scheduled despite threats from the DPRK.
Meanwhile, Japan has deployed several Patriot missile defense systems in Hiroshima, Shimane and Kochi.
The three prefectures were specifically named by Pyongyang when it announced it was working on a plan to strike targets near the US island of Guam earlier this week.
