Big Data Industry: New technology contributes to farming, poverty reduction

Today, big data technology is being used in various fields -- and agriculture is not an exemption. In China's southwestern province of Guizhou, some farmers are using big data analysis in growing kiwi fruits. CGTN's Yang Jinghao shows us how.
Zhou Zhenpin from Xiuwen County in Guiyang city has been growing kiwi fruits for some 30 years. Nowadays, he says his work has become much easier thanks to the surveillance cameras installed in his orchard.
ZHOU ZHENPIN LOCAL FARMER "My orchards cover thousands of square meters. It used to take me two to three hours to patrol around. But now, I can easily keep an eye on my workers and plants from a monitor."
The cameras are just part of a set of equipment on his farm. These matched mini "meteorological stations" play a special role.
YANG JINGHAO XIUWEN COUNTY, GUIYANG "These devices are used to collect various data related to air, soil and rainfall here. It's then transmitted in real-time to a big data center in the county."
With data analysis, experts can work out planting and field management plans for farmers. It will help determine ideal times for pollination, fertilization, and harvest, in order to yield high-quality fruits.
ZHOU ZHENPIN LOCAL FARMER "In the past, we relied on experience to cultivate kiwi fruits, and had no idea when the right time was to harvest them. So, our earnings were not stable."
Aside from harvests, benefits of the technology can also be seen in sales. This has helped farmers be more flexible with their plans. And efforts have paid off.
YANG JIAN, DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER XIUWEN AGRICULTURAL INVESTMENT AND DEVELOPMENT LTD. "The rate of waste has declined by about 20 percent, which has turned into net profits. Good quality can guarantee a competitive price. All of this has benefited farmers whose incomes have obviously increased."
Xiuwen has been known to have a weak economy. Now, it is becoming one of China's largest bases for kiwi fruit cultivation. As a pioneering beneficiary of the new technology, Zhou is now trying to help fellow villagers with an agricultural cooperative. Members get free consultations and can sell products via a unified channel. He says it is only through this way can they grow stronger together. YJH, CGTN, Guiyang, Guizhou Province.
