“General Secretary Xi Jinping has made it clear that we will deepen reform of the medicine and healthcare system. I think children’s healthcare is also part of the deepening reform,” Dr. Jia said.
“For a while, a lot of medical students were unwilling to become pediatric physicians,” said Dr. Jia, “but in recent years, both the State Council and the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) have carried out measures favorable to the medical branch of pediatrics.”
This year, more than 4,000 medical students applied to work at Beijing Children’s Hospital. In the past three years, the number of staff members in Dr. Jia’s department has doubled from 14 to 28.
“In recent years, what I’ve tried to do is to build a team with respectable medical skills and ethics,” Jia said.

Known for his top-notch diagnostic skills, the 64-year-old ultrasound expert has seen more than 330,000 patients, diagnosed over 70,000 difficult cases and helped save over 2,000 children with severe illnesses or health conditions.
The CPC delegate is also known for his contribution to children’s healthcare in China. For the past 25 years, he has made a habit of skipping lunch so that he could receive more patients.
CGTN had an exclusive interview with Dr. Jia recently, following the CPC delegate as he went about his day and got a behind-the-scenes glimpse at a Chinese doctor’s daily routine:
