UNICEF has launched a response plan to prevent an outbreak of acute diarrhea and cholera among Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh to escape violence in Myanmar. Since August 25, 515,000 new Rohingya refugees have arrived in Cox’s Bazar, a port city in southern Bangladesh. Sixty percent of the new arrivals are children, and 30 percent are children under 5 years old. UNICEF said there are high levels of severe malnutrition among child refugees, which exacerbates the risks associated with an outbreak of diarrhea and cholera.
