China's Political Season: People in northeast China share expectations
[]
And CGTN's GUAN YANG reports from Shenyang, the capital of northeast China's Liaoning province, on what people are saying about what the Political Season has accomplished.
Behind every high speed railway line in China, there are engineers like Zhao Changwei who only start working when others are sound asleep. Zhao has been following the two sessions closely as the general manager of his company attended as an NPC deputy.
ZHAO CHANGWEI, ENGINEER CHINA RAILWAY SHENYANG GROUP "I am looking forward to knowing more about the future development plans of high speed railways. I think our manager will have some exciting news to share, especially about the railway project related to the Liaoning free trade zone."
The revitalization of northeast China's old industrial base has been the buzz words for years, and the region's stagnation has not gone unnoticed by the central government. Policies like supply-side reform in the iron & steel sector are paving the way for the northeast to reshape its economy.
Hu Mingguo, a foreign trade manager thinks the iron & steel companies are at a turning point if they can find where to fit into the big picture.
HU MINGGUO, DIRECTOR OF FOREIGN TRADE BENXI STEEL GROUP CO., LTD "What we are interested in about the two sessions, is how the big plans like the supply-side reform can further boost the competitiveness of our company, and what role iron & steel sector play in the belt & road initiative."
GUAN YANG SHENYANG "China's national people's congress concluded on Tuesday by endorsing the broad agenda for the next five years. The meetings this time are the longest legislative gathering in more than two decades. They passed constitutional amendments, elected a new leadership, decided on a new structure for the state council and laid out plenty of reform plans. These decisions will influence China in its political, economic and social landscape in the years to come."
Some effects can already be seen in the education sector where investments appeared to be paying off for China's universities. But research quality and the pool of talent still remains the weak link. Reforming career advancement has allowed young professors to move up the ladder quicker.
PROFESSOR SHEN YANBAI NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY "The two sessions pointed out that the demand for better education will be met by the growth of high-quality universities. I think the reforms on talent cultivation for young professors is a great boost."
