Over at the draw for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the continent's highest ranked side, Senegal, have been grouped with Algeria, Kenya and Tanzania as they look to clinch the trophy for the first time. CGTN's Saddique Shaban explains why this could be the year the squad live up to their full potential.
A total of 24 teams divided into six groups will compete in the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal is in Group C alongside Algeria, Kenya and Tanzania. Lions of Teranga are in a seemingly easy group, but the Senegalese football federation is not taking any chances with their preparations.
MAYACINE MAR SENEGAL F.A. TECHNICAL DIRECTOR "The Africa Cup of Nations starts now, we were eager to know who our opponents are, now we will fine-tune our preparations ahead of the tournament. During our friendly matches, we will look for teams that have the same profile as those with whom we share the same group."
Senegal were knocked out of the group stage in 2015 before reaching the quarters in the 2017 edition in Gabon. The 2018 World Cup finalists are currently the top ranked team in Africa, a move that has excited the crowds at home and giving them hope of winning a maiden AFCON title.
IBRAHIMA MBOUP SPORTS ANALYST "As of now, we've lost three games in a row to Algeria, they're the most serious opponent in the group. Then there is Kenya, which Senegal beat here in Dakar 3-0 in 1992, and also in 2004, they are an easy opponent. The third opponent is Tanzania, who are making their return to the Africa Cup of Nations after an almost 40-year hiatus. I think Senegal and Algeria are the two teams that will qualify from this group."
ISSA LAYE DIOP SENEGAL'S 12TH GAINDE PRESIDENT "Senegal has a challenge to face and a status to defend, we are Africa's best team. In a week's time, we will launch a mobilization platform to bring together all Senegalese people around the national team."
The 2019 tournament will involve 24 teams, the biggest in the history of the tournament, allowing football nations such as Madagascar, Mauritania and Burundi to participate in Africa's football competition for the first time. Saddique Shaban, CGTN.
