In an era where clean energy is gaining momentum all round the world, a Chinese company is helping to power one of its partners under the Belt and Road Initiative. CGTN's Dave Deen shows us how.
Tebian Electric Apparatus, or TBEA, is one of China's leaders in the transformer industry. They created China's first 10 kilovolt transformer. Now on the international stage, TBEA has successfully developed the world's first 1,100 kilovolt converter transformer.
HUANG XINNAN DEPUTY CHIEF ENGINEER, TBEA "I have been with the company since I graduated college. At first I just wanted to support my family. I never thought about going global or pursuing technology innovation back then. We used to draw our plans out by hand, but now we have 3D modeling and simulation software to pre-test designs."
TBEA spends 4 percent of its sales revenue on research and innovation every year. In addition to developing core components like outlet devices and casings, the company is now providing integrated solutions for countries under the Belt and Road Initiative. One of those countries is Pakistan. Much of Pakistan goes through power rationing intervals, sometimes for more than 8 hours a day. In 2015, TBEA built the nation's first, and one of the world's largest, single solar power plant. It will deliver electricity supply to Pakistan's Punjab Province for the next 25 years and solve 750 thousand families' electricity shortage.
LU WENBIN WORKER, TBEA TRANSFORMER FACTORY "In recent years, we have had many projects in countries like Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and elsewhere. I feel like we've produced transformers for many countries, and not just in Asia. For example, the U.S., Russia, and Argentina. Of course, we need to learn about different standards all the time, and to consider environmental conditions, such as dry, wet, even possible corrosion in coastal cities."
Over the past 20 years, TBEA has brought Chinese designs and production to more than 70 countries and regions around the world. As its reach grows, the company is just an example of the scale and pace of development happening under the Belt and Road Initiative. Dave Deen, CGTN, CHANGJI.
