Turkey says it will retaliate against any assault from the Libyan National Army, a political faction led by the rebel commander Khalifa Haftar. A spokesperson for the LNA accused Ankara of supporting its rival - the UN-backed government of National Accord in Tripoli in the country's ongoing civil war. He said they would shut Libya's airspace and sea borders to planes and vessels from Turkey. Our Correspondent ADEL EL MAHROUKY has more.
Turkey is a strong supporter to Tripoli's UN recognized government of National Accord.
Last Wednesday militias and military forces allied to Fayez Al Sarraj have managed to kick LNA forces out of Gheryan city.
A big blow for Haftar's fourth month long campaign to take over the Libyan Capital.
TAHA ALI POLITICAL ANALYST AND RESEARCHER IN NORTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS "Gheryan City is in a strategic position. It's 500 miles south Tripoli, On the logistical level, it's of very logistical importance. It works as a supply line for Khalifa Haftar's forces and other fighting forces also. It provides also a safe environment for Fayez Al Sarraj militias group. Haftar will be back to Gheryan to take it back, for its geopolitical and strategic importance."
Libya's National Army forces is now considering all Turkish planes and vessels hostile targets.
It's has warned to immediately attack them even if they enter the Western Libyan territories which Sarraj controls.
AHMED AL MISMARI LNA SPOKESMAN "Turkey interferes in Libya's conflict directly with its soldiers, aircrafts and from the seas with ships. Its supplies reach Misrata, Tripoli and Zawarah directly. Their fighter jets air surveillance take place every hour. That's why we are considering all Turkish interests hostile targets."
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO, EGYPT "If General Khalifa Haftar's threats against Turkish properties are actually implemented, analysts warn, it could spark new tension in the entire region. Turkey could consider them attacks from Haftar's regional allies."
TAHA ALI POLITICAL ANALYST AND RESEARCHER IN NORTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS "Turkey considers the war in Libya is war by proxy. Turkish decision makers believe Khalifa Haftar is an agent for some regional powers, against Turkish interests in the region, like UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Turkey could launch a war by proxy, but it could take several shapes not just military. But maybe by supporting militias on Egypt's western front."
LNA says it'll shut down its airspace to all aircrafts coming from Turkey.
It has also commanded its troops to seize control of Turkish interests inside Libya which threatens all of Turkey's investments in the troubled nation.
