Nigeria's Looted Funds: Over $320 million recovered from late president's Swiss accounts
[]
The Nigerian government says it has received more than 320 million dollars allegedly stolen by late president Sani Abacha. A statement from the Finance Ministry confirmed the money has been deposited in a special account in the Central Bank of Nigeria. CGTN's Kelechi Emekalam has more.
KELECHI EMEKALAM ABUJA, NIGERIA "Negotiations between Nigeria and the Swiss government to repatriate the funds were concluded last year. But this is a tiny fraction of public funds allegedly swindled by the former president and his family. Sani Abacha seized power in 1993 after overthrowing a transitional government and ruled Nigeria with absolute powers. Between 1993-1998 - he and his family reportedly stole an estimated $5 billion from government coffers. The funds are stashed away in various offshore accounts. Sani Abacha died in office in 1998 - 6 years later he was named 4th most corrupt leader in history - a claim disputed by subsequent Nigerian presidents. President Buhari has been reaching out to several European countries and the US to help recover the stolen funds. Corruption in Nigeria's public service is endemic-both politicians and civil servants swindle billions of public funds. President Buhari has vowed to go after anyone implicated in corrupt dealings.
