The cottage located in Lavenham, Suffolk can be dated back to the 14th century. It was called the "De Vere House," which was named after the De Vere family, one of the richest and most powerful families between the 14th and 17th centuries.
In the film franchise, it was chosen as a setting for Potter's first-ever home, where the family used to hide and was murdered by Lord Voldemort in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I".

In the film, the house also appeared in ruins after Harry and his best friend Hermione traveled back, in search for clues to defeat the Dark Lord.
It is one of the most visited places in the UK, especially for the fans of the fiction. According to local media, it is the second most visited doorway in the country, coming only after Number 10 Downing Street, the official residence and office of the British Prime Minister.

The house was a typical medieval construction, with a timber frame, fireplaces, wall paintings and a rare stone spiral staircase with a carved brick handrail, according to the BBC news.
Its current owner, the Ranzettas, said that they fell in love with the house at the first sight during a trip to Lavenham decades ago, and restored the house and gardens after purchase.
