A one-year-old boy was stuck 12 meters below the surface after falling into a 40-meter-deep well in Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province on Saturday morning.
Firefighters delivered oxygen and food to the boy down the 30-centimeter-wide hole. Nine excavators and three loaders worked into the night to dig a giant pit beside the well.
The rescue lasted for 10 hours. It was broadcast live on multiple media outlets and received widespread attention.
He was eventually pulled out of the shaft by rope.
According to research published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information in 2015, there are 10 million children injured by accidents every year. Among that number, 100,000 children die and 400,000 children are crippled.
