The fight against poverty is one that starts from the ground up. Now, leaders in China and in African nations plan to take that fight on the road; specifically the Belt and Road. Rory Coen brings us highlights from the Africa-China Poverty Reduction and Development Conference in Beijing.
A united quest spanning the length of two continents. The "Belt and Road and China-Africa Poverty Reduction Cooperation" descended on Beijing Tuesday. China itself has lifted millions out of impoverished conditions over the years. But despite massive poverty alleviation campaigns, and close work with other world powers, experts say much more work remains, both at home and abroad.
LIU YONGFU, MINISTER STATE COUNCIL LEADING GROUP OFFICE OF POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND DEVELOPMENT "We have held 133 poverty reduction seminars and shared poverty reduction experience with practitioners from 133 countries and regions, including 52 African countries."
China is willing to share its experience, but many African countries also need modern technology and market accessibility in order to downsize poverty.
BABATUNDE AHONSI REPRESENTATIVE OF UNITED NATIONS POPULATION FUND IN CHINA "What Africa is asking for from China is not handouts or Charity, but opportunities for both economies to grow together, for Africa to sell its services and products to the big Chinese market. That will contribute directly to poverty reduction."
Delegates from Africa think the Belt and Road Initiative will provide the access.
The delegates will then go on a study tour to Bijie in China's southwestern Guizhou province on August 15th and 16th. All involved hope to strengthen the fight against this global problem.
