In a bid to better understand the secrets behind China’s technical marvels, CGTN followed these master craftsmen to unveil the stunning work they have contributed towards the Chinese dream! Doctor Zhou Pinghong is an expert in POEM surgery, a technique which utilizes a 1.2-meter-long special tubular endoscope to perform precision surgery. POEM surgery was still unknown in China ten years ago. In a bid to learn this highly-skilled method, Zhou traveled to Japan in 2006. Through hard study and practice, he not only mastered the traditional POEM surgery skills, but also invented a new technique. Zhou Pinghong’s inventive method is to create an invisible tunnel in the patient’s esophageal wall. Applying this method, the surgeon has successfully completed over 100 operations and reduced the length of endoscopic surgery from at least one hour to about 20 minutes.
