One of the sports in which China is expected to do well at the Asian Games is swimming. The schedule of events in Jakarta was announced earlier this week, and the team is now focusing on its workouts in the pool, as well as laying out preparations for any potential problems in the Indonesian capital. Damion Jones has the details.
The swimming competition at the 2018 Asian Games will feature 41 events between August 19th and 24th, at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex. Led by Sun Yang and Fu Yuanhui, the Chinese men's and women's squads rank among the favorites in a variety of events. The country's aquatic athletes claimed gold in 22 races in the pool four years ago in Incheon, and are now streamlining their training routines and working out any remaining technical issues, before departing for Jakarta.
FU YUANHUI OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALIST • 100-METER BACKSTROKE "We are paying more attention to technical details during the swimming process, and as a result, the coaches can pinpoint our problems immediately."
China has also brought in physical trainer Lori Briggs to run land-based workouts, which should only help the squads improve their conditioning, as the American's many decades of experience include time working with a superstar named Michael Phelps.
Steering clear of performance-enhancing drugs will be another point of emphasis at the continental competition, and earlier this year, all of China's swimmers signed an anti-doping commitment agreement, while the coaches added their names earlier this week. And with the members of the roster close to reaching peak form, they feel confident about heading to Indonesia in the best possible shape to achieve as much success as possible. DJ, CGTN.
