The 2018 Russia World Cup Qualifiers have come to the final round, and 21 teams have so far booked their places in Russia.
Ten teams from Europe have now booked their berths through automatic qualification, while eight of the second-placed teams will enter the play-offs to try to earn their place. They will learn who they face when the draw is held on October 17 in Zurich. The group winners who have qualified are Belgium, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, Serbia and Spain.
There are four more European places up for grabs that will be contested by Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, and Switzerland in two-legged play-offs.
One of the best stories coming out of the European qualifying campaign was that of Iceland whose 2-0 victory over Kosovo saw them win Group I and become the smallest nation to ever make it to the World Cup finals. The result is not surprising after Iceland made it to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 by knocking out England, and now their fans will have a chance to thunderclap on football's biggest stage.
Four South American sides can start making their plans for next year's World Cup as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay have all punched their tickets to the main draw in Russia. Peru will try to join them after next month's two-legged inter-confederation play-off against Oceania representatives New Zealand.
Argentina's joy contrasts with a shock from an island nation off the coast of South America, as Trinidad and Tobago hosted the USA in the last round of CONCACAF qualifying. The Americans had not missed a World Cup since 1986, and only needed to beat the bottom side in their region to extend that streak to eight consecutive tournaments. But the Soca Warriors were in no mood to roll over for the Stars and Stripes and won the match 2-1.
That result drops the Americans to fifth place, meaning they fail to advance by one point. The three automatic spots are claimed by Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama. The play-off bid goes to Honduras, who will face Australia in next month's inter-confederation round.
The Asian Football Confederation's preliminary competition offers four and a half berths at the 2018 Russia World Cup. Now four countries have booked their spots – Iran, Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia. The four teams are the top finishers from Group A and Group B, which were made up of 12 top teams from Asia.
Australia now have to go through an intercontinental play-off to clinch a spot after ending Syria’s dream of their first World Cup with a 2-1 win.
