Hong Kong’s highest court has rejected an appeal application from two ousted lawmakers-elect over their disqualifications.
Yau Wai-ching and Leung Chung-hang made the application to the Court of Final Appeal in February 2017.
The pair were disqualified due to their controversial conduct during oath-taking ceremonies last October, displaying “Hong Kong is not China” flags and changing the wording of their oaths in a way insulting to the nation.
Their disqualifications in November last year came after the Chinese Central Authority handed down an interpretation on Basic Law which said that lawmakers must take their oaths sincerely and accurately in a solemn way.
Four other lawmakers were disqualified last month for their improper ways of oath-taking.
Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the government will soon discuss arrangements for a by-election now that court proceedings regarding the two lawmakers-elect are complete.
