In qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, South Africa failed to capitalize on home advantage and were held to a scoreless draw by Libya on Saturday. It leaves Stuart Baxter's men in second place in Group E-- and with their work cut out for them if they hope to make it to next year's tournament. CGTN's Sias du Plessis has more.
STUART BAXTER SOUTH AFRICA COACH "We have to be disappointed because it is a home game, it is a massive chance for us to take 3 points therefor there is no smiling faces in the dressing room."
Stuart Baxter was clearly disappointed after his team struggled against a stubborn Libyan team in tough conditions in Durban. His charges have come under fire for not taking their North African opposition seriously and getting the result they required.
KGOMOTSO MOKOENA SUNDAY SUN SPORTS EDITOR "I think it is all about complacency with our team, they undermine, they underestimate our opposition. They must put it in their head that gone are those days when you used to have smaller teams when you used to have weak teams it is no longer the case."
Football scribes have had mixed feelings about Baxter and his band of not-so-merry men and hope that with their work cut out in the next few months they will learn from missed opportunities.
PHILASANDE SIXABA EYEWITNESS NEWS SPORTS REPORTER "If they can really do well to Libya and really put in a good performance in Tripoli, beat the Seychelles convincingly, I know Libya put 6 past the Seychelles, Nigeria just put 3 past the Seychelles. The Seychelles are really up for the taking at home and away."
Qualification is still in their hands and the national coach has called upon his charges to react in a positive way for the remaining 4 qualifiers.
STUART BAXTER SOUTH AFRICA COACH "Pressure is not something we create, it is something we respond to and if you respond in the correct way and you believe in yourself, then you have got more chance of turning around those situations and not be the rabbit in the headlights that sometimes we've seen."
SIAS DU PLESSIS SOWETO, SOUTH AFRICA "The Bafana players have been criticised for their lack of desire and hunger going into these AFCON qualifiers. The result in Durban may be evidence of that. But when they clash against the Seychelles at the stadium behind me on October 10th, it is a must win game. They will need to put their bodies on the line to stand any chance of qualifying for AFCON next year in Cameroon. Sias du Plessis, CGTN, Soweto."
