Hong Kong growth stable in past 20 years, but well below Shanghai, Guangzhou
[]
‍Hong Kong's gross domestic product (GDP) has grown by an average 3.2 percent-year-on year since its return to China in 1997.
In 1997, it accounted for slightly over 18 percent of the GDP of the Chinese mainland, but the figure has since declined to less than 3 percent due to the mainland's rapid economic growth.
According to official statistics, the annual income of Hong Kong residents in 2016 increased by 5.3 percent. But this was still below the figures for Shanghai and Guangzhou.
