Shah Rukh Khan, who's also known as "King Khan" of Bollywood, is in China for the 9th Beijing International Film Festival. CGTN has an exclusive interview with him on acting in Chinese films, as well as his new film - Zero. Let's take a look.
KHUSHBOO RAZDO BEIJING "Your movie Zero will be screened at the closing ceremony of the 9th Beijing International Film Festival, how significant do you think it is for your movie and the Indian cinema as a whole?"
SHAH RUKH KHA ACTOR "I think I will do this personally. I'll tell you it's very significant for me to come down here. I had been planning to come here. I know Indian films have so marvelously been received here, so many wonderful actors like Aamir and all have been coming with their work. And I get very happy when Indian cinema is taken worldwide and China being China and being such a huge market plus, making it soon foray into big cinema internationally very important. So, there's a good part to it that I am here. I just wanted to come and meet everyone, and just enjoy the fun, and get down and see what the festival is like, meet all of you and meet some hopefully Chinese filmmakers, actors and actresses."
KHUSHBOO RAZDO BEIJING "Would you like to work in a Chinese movie?"
SHAH RUKH KHA ACTOR "I would love to if you can teach me Chinese quickly. I have grown up in the time when Chinese films in India were like a rage and even now, I was also learning how to make films so maybe I saw more but Kung Fu films had taken over, we were really inspired by them, my era guys, most the action and the things that we think of also because they were comic, so they are entertaining. Even today I think a lot of Telegu cinema is completely like the Chinese commercial cinema, of course, the serious cinema set apart, so for me, it's important that a cinema that I have grown upon if I am able to participate in, in whichever way, co-produce it, co-act it, do something and I also do believe that technologically China is superior in cinema right now and we could learn from that and content-wise, we can also bring something new. We are quite common culturally, we have family values and I think all that can come together."
KHUSHBOO RAZDO BEIJING "Do you think Bollywood movies can become a bridge between the two countries and when you come here with your movie, you automatically become a cultural ambassador?"
SHAH RUKH KHA ACTOR "I think whatever is culture and I think cinema is kind of modern culture because somewhere down the line it's still unheedingly telling stories of your own culture especially in China and India. I think anything which is you know cultural, which is storytelling, which is an art form is going to break all barriers, you know, there are going to be people to people connect. I know Mr. Chris Martin, sometimes I don't even understand his accent but I love the music and I am sure when I made some of these guys here my music and they are like, wow this is wonderful. So art, culture, reading, writings, these are going to be things that are going to enhance people to people connect because the language of art is little beyond semantics and understanding and the actual grammar, most certainly, family values, like teacher is revered, family is loved, these cultural bindings do help especially in countries like India and China which are so seeped into culture and tradition, so I think art and cinema is going to be a big big big boost, technology, exports and imports all that is going to happen but cinema is always going to be at the forefront or art is going to be at the forefront of people to people exchange."
