Hollywood's awards season wrapped up with the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday night in Los Angeles. Phil Lavelle tells us about the biggest winners.
Hollywood was waiting for it. Times up here. The industry knows it. The Oscars needed to acknowledge it. Host Jimmy Kimmel did that from the beginning.
When it came to the big prizes, there was no single big winner. This was a year where the prizes were really shared among greats.
This movie, The Shape of Water, getting two of the big awards. It had been up for thirteen so was expected to do well all along. And it did. giving Guillermo Del Toro Best Director. He'd been considered a strong contender from the start. And also taking perhaps the biggest prize of the night best picture.
Darkest Hour gave Gary Oldman a win for Best Actor. This was one of two world war movies up for Oscars. His portrayal of Winston Churchill was described as phenomenal by critics although he hadn't been considered the favourite all along.
But Frances McDormand HAD been favourite for best actress. Few seemed surprised that her powerful portrayal of a grieving mother wowed the academy to such an extent.
And as she took that prize, she made a point of bringing all of the women together highlighting an undertone of this year's show.
PHIL LAVELLE HOLLYWOOD "And so, the Oscars wraps up for another year. A year which has seen awarded season overshadowed by the darker side of the industry. And now, the set here is being dismantled. This show is over but that conversation and those uncomfortable truths will continue for many more months to come. Phil Lavelle, CGTN, at the Oscars in Hollywood."
