China has also supported Senegal in various sports and cultural initiatives, which have become popular among locals. Let's take a look at some of them.
Senegalese are fond of sports. However, due to a lack of available funding, there are few public gyms or exercise parks.
In 2016, thanks to support from the Ambassador Fund, several Chinese companies teamed up to build a fitness park in Dakar. With more than 400 different machines, it attracts large numbers of people.
"I come here every day to keep in shape - particularly to exercise my abdominal muscles!"
"I like to exercise every day. I don't live very far from here, so I often come here with my kids to exercise together. I want to make my kids aware of the importance of keeping fit. And this equipment is very good, it's very relaxing being here."
China has also invested in Senegalese culture. The Grand National Theatre was the first initiative by Chinese construction companies after the countries resumed diplomatic ties in 2005. It's hosted many high-profile galas and exhibitions. And is regarded as a bridge connecting Chinese and Senegalese culture.
KEISSY BOUSSO, GENERAL MANAGER GRAND NATIONAL THEATER OF SENEGAL "This theatre has done so much for the country. Every year, 50 to 60 Senegalese productions are staged here. And troupes from all over the world come here to perform."
The Black Civilization Museum is another important project supported by the Chinese government. Thousands of historical artifacts are exhibited here.
EL-HADJI MALICK NDIAYE ART HISTORIAN "This museum is a resource not only to young people in Senegal, but also to young people in other African countries. They are able to research African history and learn more about the continent. African history is often controversial, with contradictory perspectives, depending on who is telling the story. This museum provides scientific evidence and enables students to broaden their studies in African history."
From sports to culture, the bond between China and Senegal continue to grow stronger with every year that passes. LM, CGTN.
