MOFA: China backs Spanish government’s safeguarding national unity

China understands and supports the efforts of the Spanish government to safeguard its national unity, ethnic solidarity and territorial integrity, said a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesperson on Thursday, in reference to the stalled prospects of the Catalonia region achieving independence.
Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont said on Tuesday that the declaration of Catalan independence would be suspended to open a period of dialogue with the Spanish government.

“China believes in the ability of the Spanish government to guarantee social order and civil rights,” MOFA’s Hua Chunying told reporters.
"The two countries have a friendly relationship and we will continue to develop ties with Spain under the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs," she added.
