China's State Council Information office has briefed the media on the opportunity, challenge and prospect of the BRICS mechanism. The grouping seeks to establish a brighter future for the development of the world economy. 

Zhang Jianping, deputy director of the Academic Steering Committee, Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, Ministry of Commerce, indicated the GDP of the member countries accounting for the world economy rose from 12 to 23 percent during the past decade. The percentage of the members' international trade went up from 11 to 16 percent, and also the foreign investment experienced an increase from seven to 12 percent.

The BRICS mechanism plays a vital role in promoting the development of the economy and trade of the member countries as well as the development of the world economy, he said.

According to Zhang, BRICS intends to deepen the partnership among the member countries, strengthening the international cooperation. The BRICS mechanism aims to maintain the stability and unity of the world, establishing a stronger international monetary system. 

Also the cultural exchanges among the members should be encouraged, pushing the development of education and sports forward, he added.

Forging a more extensive partnership, BRICS will widen the "Friend Circle" by inviting more developing countries and those countries that are under economic transformation to join. For the next decade, BRICS will further strengthen the governance system, playing a larger role in global economic development.
