In a fast-changing world with increasing challenges for the media industry, CGTN has launched our second annual global media summit to assess the future of the media. CGTN Ge Yunfei reports from the summit.
The second annual CGTN Global Media Summit and the 8th Video Media Forum kicked off in southwestern, China's Chongqing city Tuesday morning. In his opening speech, CGTN controller Jiang Heping said the network will achieve six fundamental redefinitions: television, content, the role of technology, audience, super desk mechanism, and the scope of opinion. He says these goals will make the network a more modern multimedia organization.
JIANG HEPING CGTN SUPERINTENDENT "Targeting each different language, culture, and platform, we've devised specific approaches and strategies. Such a high degree of specialization and focus ensures the precision and effectiveness in presenting our content."
Jiang's keynote speech was titled 'Be true to Nature and Stay on Focus: CGTN's Approach to Value-added Communication.'
JIANG HEPING CGTN SUPERINTENDENT "We offer tailor-made services to high-end customers as well as products easily available to the general public, with different categories targeted at each segment of our audience. Our distribution channels maximize our capabilities in connecting with our consumers and serving them. Through value-added communication, CGTN is supplying products and services to millions of individuals and winning their hearts and minds."
Earlier this year, the founding of China Media Group, which CGTN is part of, marked a milestone in China's media convergence.
VIPP JASWAL HEAD OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, FOX NEWS CHANNEL "Now we see media companies across the world, in fact our host, the China Media Group, this strategy is extremely smart. They are focusing on growing the market together rather than fighting for market share."
GE YUNFEI CHONGQING "Around 500 media elites from leading global media organizations have gathered here to explore the future of media development, and discuss the new technologies under the theme of opening and connecting the world."
In today's world, misinformation on the internet challenges people's confidence in the media. It leads to clashes between ideologies, cultures and political stereotypes, a hot topic at the summit.
PHIL CHETWYND GLOBAL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, AFP "It's been a huge moment of reflection for us to really look at everything we're doing, like are we telling all sides of the story? What sides of the story did we miss?"
In the following panel discussion, CGTN sat down with AFP, Channel News Asia, Phoenix TV and the BBC, to share thoughts and experiences on how foreign media can deliver unbiased coverage on certain countries.
PHIL CHETWYND GLOBAL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, AFP "It requires a major reflection which we broadly called 'post-Trump-Brexit' era. It comes down internally to absolutely double down on the quality of the agency, our sourcing guidelines, the determination to be accurate."
Some say conducting totally unbiased coverage is mission impossible.
ALEXEY NIKOLOV MANAGING EDITOR, RT "Overall that's a high aim, high target that we all are trying to achieve and which cannot completely be achieved anywhere. But that is the goal that we all try to reach."
