Mattis in China: Military cooperation a regular part of China-US discussions

China and the US have much room to cooperate on military fronts. The Chinese and US presidents have met several times, and constantly bring up chances to work together on security. Let's take a look.

The Mar-a-Lago meeting in April 2017 between presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump counted for much, as their first face-to-face communication since Trump took office.

Both sides said a new dialogue mechanism will be established between their joint staffs of the armed forces. This was to supplement existing military dialogues, including the Defense Consultative Talks.

On the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg in July 2017, both leaders held direct discussions on advancing military ties.

President Xi suggested for their defense ministers to exchange visits as soon as possible.

In November, President Trump paid a state visit to China, and both leaders exchanged in-depth views addressing security challenges.

Despite ongoing trade frictions, China and the US are working together on various security fronts.

Such a common ground supports more cooperation and less confrontation for the two nations.
