With controversy surrounding alleged rigging in the election, the democratic transition has finally taken place in Pakistan. It has been a long and tough journey for the Tehrik-e-Insaf party. And despite flaws in the political system, there is hope for change. Our correspondent Danial Khan takes a closer look at Pakistan, after the elections.
DANIAL KHAN ISLAMABAD "Experts maintain that adamant struggle of 22 years has finally gotten Imran Khan to the summit of power. A highly energetic and committed team of men and women is now in the house, forming a strong base for the Justice Party to bring about change, that it had promised to the people of Pakistan."
A new parliament has been seated and for its first time, Imran Khans led justice party is preparing to take up governing responsibilities at the centre and in the provinces. Though the democratic process may be fragile, its continuity may help create the space necessary for its strengthening. But for the PTI, it's an uphill task.
DR. RAMESH KUMAR PAKISTAN TEHRIK-E-INSAF "There are two issues, one is the finance minister and the second is the foreign minister. Two are the main challenges and two are the main ministries, who can boost our economy and our relations with the international community."
After PTI emerged as the single largest party in the elections, Imran Khan, in his victory address to the nation made a number commitments to the people. He said, the government would operate in simplicity and will help the marginalized to get economic opportunities, creating jobs for the youth and make pro-farmers policies. Apart from establishing a strict rule of law, eradicating corruption, he said his government will duplicate the China Model within Pakistan in order to alleviate poverty and create wealth in the nation.
SHIREEN MAZARI PAKISTAN TEHRIK-E-INSAF "We are going to increase our strategic partnership with China, and Inshallah you will see, we will have greater substantive cooperation with China, across the board."
Imran Khan is now fully in the saddle, but post elections, he has been noticeably burdened with the sense of the coming responsibilities. Experts say for him and his government, the promise of turning over a new leaf and changing Pakistans destiny will certainly be an enormous challenge in the days to come. Danial Khan, CGTN, Islamabad.
